Health Career Scholarship

What is the Health Career Scholarship Fund?

The Health Career Scholarship Fund is a program set up by the Board of Trustees of Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Healthcare Center.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial assistance to those students and residents of the Tahquamenon Area Schools and Engadine School District who wish to pursue a healthcare career. The Fund is designed to help meet expenses related to attending a program in health careers and permits the recipient to select, enter, or to continue a course of study in a program of his or her choice.

Although it is by no means mandatory, it is the wish of the Hospital that scholarship recipients consider, upon graduation from their program, returning to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Healthcare Center.

How are Recipients Selected?

In reaching their final decision, the Health Career Scholarship Committee will review the applicant's written essay, appraise their potential for their chosen career, review their scholastic record thus far, and examine their personal references.

Scholarship finalists may be required to participate in an oral interview with the Scholarship Committee.

The Committee will ask themselves the following questions:

  •       Does the applicant work well with others?
  •       Is there evidence that the applicant is making appropriate plans for career preparation?
  •       Is the applicant able to assume responsibility on his or her own?
  •       Does the applicant show initiative? Is he or she resourceful?
  •       Is the applicant skilled in written and oral communication?
  •       Has the applicant met the admission requirements of a school or program that is accredited?

How Much May Be Awarded?

The Health Career Scholarship Committee will select the applicants to be awarded scholarship funds and will determine the amount of the award (applicants are not required to show financial need).

The amount of each individual award will depend on the number of applicants selected by the Committee and the amount of funds available each year.
