Course Schedule
Our Nurse Aide Training is a comprehensive five-week course held Monday through Friday. Attendance and active participation are required each day to successfully complete and pass the course.

To register, please complete an HNJH Employment Application Online.
Pre-class Requirements
- Applicants must be high school graduates (or equivalent).
- Applications will be reviewed, and selected candidates will be interviewed for acceptance into the course.
- A course fee of $350.00 is required before the start of the class. Please note that this fee is non-refundable once the course begins.
- Successful applicants must complete a criminal background check, fingerprinting, and a drug screen.
About Nursing Assistants
Nurse Aides play a vital role in the healthcare system, working under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in various settings, including nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and hospice care. They help patients of all ages with basic daily tasks, providing essential support that ensures the well-being and comfort of those in their care.
Key Responsibilities of Nurse Aides:
- Assisting with dressing, bathing, and skin care
- Providing mouth and hair care
- Feeding patients and making beds
- Offering toileting assistance and catheter care
- Performing bowel and bladder care
- Taking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, etc.)
- Helping patients walk and perform range-of-motion exercises
- Assisting wheelchair-bound patients using safe patient handling devices
- Regularly turning and repositioning bedridden patients
- Reporting changes in patients’ conditions to the supervising Nurse
- Ensuring safety awareness
- Observing, reporting, and documenting patient conditions
- Providing post-mortem care
Nurse Aides are trained to observe, recognize, and assess changes in patient conditions. They learn vital skills, including proper body mechanics, therapeutic diets, communication, and understanding residents’ rights. Additionally, they gain knowledge about the disease process, infection prevention, and how to care for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Steps to Becoming A Nurse Aide
- Attend Classes: Participate in all lectures, labs, and clinicals daily.
- Maintain Academic Standards: Achieve a minimum of 75% on all quizzes and tests.
- Earn Your Certificate: Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate for completing the State-approved program and may then apply for State testing.
- Become Certified: Once the Michigan Nurse Aide exam is successfully completed, students will receive a Certified Nurse Aide Certificate and be placed on the Michigan State Registry.
