Medical/Surgical Inpatient Nursing Department
Our 25-bed Inpatient Nursing Department (also referred to as the Medical/Surgical Unit) serves those patients requiring continuous care in a Hospital setting. Patients choose Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Healthcare Center because we offer quality healthcare, close to home. We provide a wide range of services as one of the most technologically advanced, up-to-date diagnostic centers in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Expert Care at Your Local Hospital
In addition to providing a friendly, comfortable atmosphere, our experienced nurses and patient care staff deliver expert care, addressing not just our patients’ medical or surgical condition, but their personal needs as well.
In January 2000, Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Healthcare Center was designated a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). This was due, in part, to our rural location and the distance from Newberry to other hospitals, both in the Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula of Michigan. What does being a Critical Access Hospital mean for you as a patient? First and foremost, it means that you can rely on HNJH to provide for your medical needs now and well into the future. We are a Level 4 trauma designation Emergency department, and because of this. you can also expect to see regular advancements in technology, staff training, and physician recruitment.

Our Swing Bed Program
The “Swing Bed” program at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital provides hospital-based skilled care, offering a bridge between acute hospital care and your return home. This program is ideal for patients who no longer need full hospital services but still require rehabilitation to fully recover.
Even if you’ve had surgery or inpatient care at a different hospital, you can choose to recover at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital through our Swing Bed Program, bringing your care closer to home. These stays are typically short-term and support recovery from various conditions such as stroke, heart disease, joint replacements, respiratory issues, extended antibiotic therapy, and more.
While the Swing Bed Program is primarily designed for Medicare patients as a covered benefit, it is open to individuals of all ages, depending on their insurance coverage.
