Our Eye Surgical Services in Newberry, Michigan
Here are the eye surgical procedures available at HNJH through our partnership with Northern Eye, including what each involves, what to watch for, and how to get started.
Cataract Surgery
What Is Cataract Surgery and How Does It Help?
A cataract causes the natural lens of your eye to become cloudy, making vision blurry, dim, or washed out. Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial one, restoring sharp, comfortable vision. It is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world, and most patients notice a meaningful difference shortly after recovery.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
- Blurry, cloudy, or dim vision
- Increased sensitivity to light or glare
- Difficulty seeing clearly at night
- Colors appearing faded or yellowed
- Frequent changes in your glasses or contact prescription

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
What Is Blepharoplasty and How Does It Help?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that corrects drooping or excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids. In many cases, sagging upper eyelids can actually block part of your field of vision, making this not just a cosmetic concern, but a functional one. By removing or repositioning excess skin and tissue, blepharoplasty can restore a full field of vision and reduce the heaviness or fatigue many patients feel around their eyes. Both upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty are available through our eye surgery program.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
- Drooping or hooded upper eyelids
- Upper eyelid skin that folds down and interferes with your vision
- Puffiness or bags under the eyes
- Eye fatigue or difficulty keeping your eyes fully open
- Reduced peripheral or upper field of vision

Laser Trabeculoplasty
What Is Laser Trabeculoplasty and How Does It Help?
Laser trabeculoplasty is a procedure used to treat open-angle glaucoma, a condition where increased pressure inside the eye can gradually damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. Using a focused laser, your surgeon improves the drainage of fluid from the eye, which helps lower eye pressure and protect your long-term vision. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and is often recommended when eye drops alone are not providing enough control.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
- Diagnosed or suspected glaucoma
- Elevated eye pressure identified during a routine eye exam
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision
- Eye drops not adequately controlling eye pressure
- Family history of glaucoma

YAG Laser Procedures
What Are YAG Laser Procedures and How Do They Help?
YAG laser procedures are quick, precise outpatient treatments used to address two common eye concerns. A YAG capsulotomy treats a condition called posterior capsule opacification — a clouding that can develop after cataract surgery and cause vision to become hazy again. A YAG vitreolysis targets floaters in the vitreous of the eye — the shadowy spots or strings that drift across your field of vision and interfere with clarity. Both procedures use a focused laser to restore clear, comfortable vision with minimal recovery time.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
- Cloudy or hazy vision returning after previous cataract surgery
- Noticeable floaters — dark spots, threads, or shapes moving across your vision
- Glare or light sensitivity following cataract surgery
- Gradual decline in visual clarity after a prior procedure
