As summer heats up in the Upper Peninsula, many of us are spending more time hiking, camping, and enjoying the outdoors. With warm weather, however, also comes an increased risk of tick bites and Lyme disease. At Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, we’re here to help you stay safe while enjoying all that nature has to offer. Here are four key tips to protect yourself and your family this season.
Know Where Ticks Live
Ticks thrive in wooded areas, tall grasses, and leaf litter. They’re especially common along trails and in areas where deer roam. When hiking or walking outdoors, stay on well-marked paths and avoid brushing against tall vegetation. If you’re working in your yard or out in nature, be extra cautious around shady, damp environments.
Dress For Protection
What you wear matters. Choose long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes when venturing into tick-prone areas. Light-colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks. For added protection, consider using insect repellent that contains 20–30% DEET, and treat clothing or gear with products containing permethrin.
Check Yourself and Your Pets
After being outdoors, do a full-body tick check as soon as possible. Don’t forget hidden areas like the scalp, behind the knees, under arms, and around the waist. Showering within two hours of being outside can help wash away ticks before they attach. Pets can bring ticks indoors, so check them frequently and ask your vet about tick prevention treatments.
When in Doubt, Reach Out
If you find a tick attached or start experiencing symptoms like fever, rash, or fatigue after a bite, don’t wait. Early treatment is key to preventing serious complications from Lyme disease. The new Helen Newberry Joy Hospital Clinic is now open and ready to care for you and your family; no appointments are needed for most visits.
