The Winter Holidays: A Time to Celebrate, But Also a Time for Safety

Dec 26, 2024

The winter holidays are a season of joy, gatherings, and celebration with friends and family. For many, alcohol is part of these festivities, but it’s also a time when impaired driving—and its tragic consequences—spikes. Sobering statistics remind us of the responsibility we carry when we get behind the wheel.

The Stark Reality of Impaired Driving

  • In the United States, an alcohol-impaired driver kills someone every 39 minutes.
  • Michigan-specific data reveals drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit are seven times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes and six to seventeen times more likely to be killed themselves.
  • 26% of all fatal crashes in Michigan are alcohol-related, often occurring between midnight and 3:00 a.m.
Nationally, the statistics are equally alarming:
  • In 2020, 11,654 people died in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers—30% of all traffic deaths that year—a 14.3% increase from 2019.
  • 32 people die every day in the U.S.

rom alcohol-related crashes, equating to one life lost every 45 minutes.

The Hidden Role of Drugs in Impaired Driving

While alcohol’s impact is well-documented, drug-impaired driving remains harder to quantify due to limited data. However, recent studies shed light on the issue:

  • A study of 4,243 seriously injured drivers found that 54% tested positive for alcohol and/or drugs between September 2019 and July 2021.
    • 22% tested positive for alcohol,
    • 25% for marijuana,
    • 9% for opioids,
    • 10% for stimulants, and
    • 8% for sedatives.

The Ripple Effect: Who Is Impacted?

The consequences of impaired driving extend far beyond the drivers themselves:

  • 62% of those killed in alcohol-impaired crashes in 2020 were the drivers, but
  • 38% were passengers, occupants of other vehicles, or nonoccupants such as pedestrians.
  • Tragically, 229 children (ages 0–14) lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes in 2020, representing 21% of all traffic-related child deaths.
The Alarming Prevalence of Impaired Driving Behavior

Despite widespread awareness campaigns, impaired driving persists at a concerning level:

  • About 1 million arrests are made annually for driving under the influence, yet this represents only a fraction of impaired drivers on the road.
  • According to the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH):
    • 18.5 million people admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol,
    • Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System revealed that 1.2% of adults drove after drinking too much in 2020, equating to 127 million episodes of alcohol-impaired driving.

    What Can You Do?

As you celebrate this holiday season, remember the profound responsibility you have as a driver. Plan ahead:

    • Designate a sober driver or use a ridesharing service.
    • Speak up if someone you know plans to drive impaired.
    • Encourage responsible behavior to ensure everyone gets home safely.

Together, we can celebrate the season while preventing the senseless loss of life on our roads. Make safety your top priority—because no holiday celebration is worth a life.
